It currently contested by 10 teams (franchises) consisting of players from different countries. It was started after an altercation between the BCCI and the Indian Cricket League. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched the Indian Premier League (IPL) on September 15, 2007.

IPL 2012 Schedule – IPL 5 to begin on April 4 and conclude on May 27. Defending IPL champions the Chennai Super Kings will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in the first match of the IPL 5 on April 08, 2012. The governing body also released the schedule of the IPL 2012 with changes in the play off system for the fourth edition of the game. IPL 5 will see 9 teams and the governing body released provisional schedule of the games and the opening match will be at MA Chidambaram Stadium Chennai which will see the champions go to defend with the Mumbai Indians on April 4, 2012. It is also their right to host the first match of the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League. According to the tentative schedule, the 10 teams which include the two additions of franchises the Kochi and the Sahara Pune Warriors will play in all 75 matches and at 13 venues. The 75 matches are spread across 53 days and to reach the finals the final four teams of the IPL 5 will have to play in a new play-off system which will be coming into effect from the 2012 season. IPL Teams play each other twice in a round robin system, with the top four ranking sides progressing to the semi-finals. The nine teams taking part are Royal Challenger Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Rider, Chennai Super King, Kings XI Punjab, Deccans Charges, Sahara Pune Warriors, Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils.
